Indicative Content
Childhood Health and Wellbeing
• Overview of the holistic care needs of children and their health requirements, overview of life span approach to health and wellbeing - prenatal development to birth/0-3 years/3-6 years, physical and psychological basis for health, the nine dimensions of children’s development, identification of how environmental factors can impact on childhood health such as - health screening/vaccination schedule, family, lifestyle, environment, education, culture, religion and communities, Síolta Standard 9 – Health and Welfare.
Health and Wellbeing in the Early Childhood Setting
• The impact of the ECE environment on childhood health and wellbeing, identification and appropriate treatment of common childhood illnesses, identification of common causes of infection; strategies to promote Infection control and hygiene in the early childhood setting; prevention of cross infection through HACCP guidelines, health promotion policies and strategies in the ECE setting – oral hygiene, healthy eating, physical activity, outdoor play etc., the benefits of a partnership approach to health and wellbeing in childhood; personal care routines in the ECE setting and development of practical skills to undertake health and wellbeing routines.
The Child’s Voice
• Overview of the rights of the child, policies and practices in the ECE setting which promote the rights of the child, inclusion and equality in the ECE setting, examining high standards of quality in the ECE setting in relation to the implementation of relevant policies and procedures.
Elements involved in protecting children in the ECE setting
• Introduction to the elements involved in protecting children, for example identifying common childhood injuries and their causes, addressing common childhood injuries, assessing and managing risk in the ECE setting, reporting and inter-professional collaboration and maintaining a secure and safe ECE environment while working in collaboration with parents.
