Critically consider how theory and research in developmental psychology can inform applied interventions and policy. |
LO2 |
Consider and evaluate the influence of risk factors associated with resilience science, social media use, parenting, bullying and addiction on developmental outcomes. |

Critically evaluate the efficacy of interventions in areas such as parenting, bullying and addiction, taking a lifespan perspective. |
LO4 |
Critically assess on-going research in applied developmental psychology within the Irish context. |
LO5 |
Review developmental research techniques and study designs, with a focus on the ethical dimension of research in development. |

Module content:
After an introduction to the core aims, methods and assumptions of the discipline, the module is structured so that each week learners are introduced to a main topic in Applied Developmental Psychology and exposed to core theories, research and applications underlying this topic. Specific focus will be on the applied aspects of developmental psychology, interventions etc.

Introduction and Irish Research: Course overview, research techniques and methodologies in applied developmental psychology; current Irish research including the Growing Up in Ireland study and the Early Learning Institute
Risk and Resilience
Personality Traits, Self-Cognition and Social Media
Parenting and Family Influences
Peers, Popularity, and Bullying
Drug Use in Adolescence: Developmental Influences and Outcomes
Language Development & its Influence on Mental Health
Final Lecture: Poster Presentation Exhibition

Assessment Description: Essay: The lecturer will identify a popular documentary related to the area of Developmental Psychology for students to watch (e.g. Netflix Series “I am a Killer” or Louis Theroux BBC Series). After watching the documentary, the students should write a short report (~1000/1500 words) outlining how the documentary relates to developmental psychology. The students should make suggestions as to how theory and research in developmental psychology might explain or contribute to the content in the documentary. A specific report title will be drafted based on the documentary content. |
