The module uses a learner-centred approach which acknowledges the variety of learning preferences in the classroom. It is highly interactive and primarily workshop-based, incorporating opportunities for learning by doing and through engagement with fellow students. Students will participate in activities designed to facilitate the development of their learning skills and strategies, aimed to enhance their ability to engage with and participate in modules taken during the course of their studies. |

| Module Description: |
The purpose of this module is to aid students in their learning process and to assist in the transition to higher education.
To guide learners towards identifying, developing and using the key skills needed to successfully manage their learning for Higher Education.
To enhance student engagement and participation and consequently academic success in the modules taken during the course of their study.

Apply a variety of learning skills and strategies that coincide with their learning strengths and preferences. |

Evaluate their strengths and weaknesses and implement a self-development plan which reflects on the actions needed to further their learning skills and strategies. |

Demonstrate their reading, writing, note-taking, summarising and time-management skills, displaying evidence of the skills needed to avoid plagiarism and maintain appropriate ethical standards for academic writing. |

Students will prepare a portfolio documenting and evidencing the learning that has taken place throughout the module. Elements of this portfolio will be prepared in class, while other elements will be completed during independent study time. Indicative content of the portfolio: reflection on learning strengths and preferences; self-development plan; critical report (academic assignment/literature review/book review/critique); end of semester reflection and indication of future study plans; reflection on group presentation exercise. Components of portfolio may vary, particularly if assessment is integrated with other modules on the programme. |

In groups of 3 or 4, you are asked to prepare and present a 15 minute presentation to be delivered to the class, which should be accompanied by a one page explanatory hand-out, emphasising key arguments and referencing works cited. Part of the presentation will incorporate peer- and self-assessment, which will allow you to reflect on your own performance and that of your group in the preparation of the presentation. |
