Teaching and Learning Strategy: Teaching & Learning will take place via Lectures, Reflective Journals, Class discussions and Community partnership. The lecturer will provide structured learning with a student centred focus. Group discussions, lectures, case studies, team tasks and debates will be used. Practical skills exercises such as case studies, problem solving and presentation skills will be designed to facilitate knowledge transfer and application, that is, from theoretical concepts to practical situations. Feedback will be provided to students as they progress through each assessment component.
Learning Environment: Learning will take place in a classroom/community environment with access to IT resources. Learners will have access to library resources, both physical & electronic and to faculty outside of the classroom where required. Module materials will be placed on Moodle, the College’s virtual learning environment.
Module Description: The module aims to develop an understanding of core learning and communication issues in the construction of a Community Based Project, and to show how these link together to develop a range of employability skills in a changing environment. The Module provides learners with the practical, analytical, and theoretical skills, tools and techniques to negotiate, design and implement a Community Based Project. Learners will select a topic or project of significant interest to a community organisation and apply their knowledge and skill in an integrated way to its improvement, planning or implementation as appropriate. In line with the philosophy of service learning the module’s aim is to bridge the gap between theory and practice and help learners apply their academic studies to community based practice. The focus of each learner’s community based project will vary in accordance with individual interests and community contexts but all will achieve the learning outcomes above. Students will be supported through lectures on literature search and review as well as sessions with the tutor where each student will develop ideas for his or her own service learning project.
